My common grammar mistakes

My common grammar mistakes are article and run on sentences.

Article

"An article is a word that combines with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun, and may also specify the volume or numerical scope of that reference, i.e., 'the' and 'a (an)'."

Definite article (English the) is used before singular and plural nouns that refer to a particular member of a group.

An indefinite article (English a, an) is used before singular nouns that refer to any member of a group.

For articles, as long as I have taken EG1471, all I need to improve now is to find out where the noun need to be specific or not, then life will be much easier. Ha-ha, thank EG1471 for this part!

Run on sentences

"A run-on sentence is a sentence in which two or more independent clauses (that is, complete sentences) are joined with absolutely no punctuation or conjunction." Before EG1471, I didn't even know that is run on sentence...and I do sometimes have problems on this, affected by my mother tough.

Here are some "Chinglish" mistakes I often encounter:

1. There is a notice prohibits gambling and prostitution.

 This may be accepted in spoken English, but not in formal writings.

 Correct: There is a notice that prohibits gambling and prostitution.

2. It is you are surprised but not them are surprised.

 Need a "that" to be stressed.

 Correct: It is not they but you that are surprised.

3. You need is a heavy travel bag.

 Correct: What you need is a heavy travel bag.

4. Fortunately it is hot, you needn't have any bedding.

 Haha, the comma here is strange; there are many ways to correct this.

 Correct:

       Fortunately it is hot; you needn't have any bedding.

       Fortunately it is hot, so you needn't have any bedding.

       You needn't have any bedding because it is fortunately hot.

       You needn't have any bedding due to the hot weather.

 

In conclusion, WORD is not that trustable....
